Androlikou

This is still known as ‘Goat’ village because there used to be hundreds of goats here. It is an ex-Turkish Cypriot village though a few people are beginning to move in and mains electricity has recently been installed and many new stone walls have been built. There is even a post box now.

From Paphos take the turnoff left to Kathikas just past Stroumbi then follow signs to Polis. At Prodromi, when you are almost at the coast, take the left-hand turn signposted Androlikou. A road which is now tarmacked will take you into the village.

Looking around

This is a fairly big village but a lot of plant life has been foraged by the goats or destroyed by weed killer. There is what must have been the village square, now with a bus stop, identified by a large Pinus brutia shade tree and a Schinus molle (Californian Pepper) tree both enclosed by low stone walls. Surrounding these are the remains of shops and coffee shops and what appears to have been a vehicle workshop. There is a locked white-walled, green-windowed building which was presumably a mosque, but without a minaret. Some of the houses are, or were, constructed of mud brick, others are piles of stones interspersed by renovated structures in which people obviously now live. There even appears to be an embryo restaurant/bar under conversion.

Although the goats have caused much desolation it is still interesting to see them staring at you from the ruins when they have returned to the village for the night. If you take the road signposted to Neochorio then as soon as you have passed the post box on the right take the next left-hand turn up a vehicle track you will reach the old schoolhouse which has been converted into a dwelling. Just past this is the fenced off bathhouse. Opposite the converted schoolhouse is, almost unbelievably, a Greek doctor's residence and perhaps practice.

From Androlikou you can return the way you came or you can go back to the Kathikas-Polis road then turn left to Polis or Latchi. Another choice is to drive to Neochorio, a sometimes confusing route, where you should arrive at an oblique T-junction above the village. From here you can turn right then drive through Neochorio to the Baths of Aphrodite or to Latchi and Polis. If you turn left here you can drive to the Smygies picnic site and the Akamas ridge track. Above the picnic site at, a T-junction, turn left onto the Akamas ridge track then follow the signs to Drousha or Inia. A third choice is to take the track to the left through the village then wend your way to either Drousha or Fasli.
